2008 Conceptual Model

July 2008

We're still trying to piece the history together, but our understanding is that the original building was built in 1913. The first owner was a laborer and the second owner was a candy maker. At some point the Morris Family purchased the building and opened MORRIS CANDY SHOP - the Taste of the Rockies.

A woman who grew up across the street told us that she remembers playing in the building as a little girl. Apparently there were marble slab tables in the basement where the Morrises made candy. Another long-time resident of the neighborhood says he remembers buying candy at the shop in 1964.

The family we purchased the building from apparently had a egg roll restaurant in the building when they first bought it in 1976. We hear that that they were the best egg rolls in town.

At some point in the 70's The Newsstand Adult Bookstore moved in. We aren't sure when they started selling pornography, but we think that it was a Boulder establishment for about 30 years. The basement where candy used to be made was converted to many viewing booths with token operated monitors. In the 90's the addition was built on to make room for additional viewing booths showing porn videos 24-7. Pleasures took the building over from the Newsstand at some point and closed in November 2007. We purchased the building on Friday, March 13, 2008.

A friend of ours lived across the street in the 1990s and remembers the place as a real cruzer, pick-up place. Some of the notes we found while cleaning up confirm his observations.

I thought calling the building "The Candy Shop" and using a vintage style provocative image for the logo was a good way to evoke both uses.
